Many of people probably know it when they see it, but few of them can articulate what irony really is — much less identify the different types. However, it’s important for writers, for instance, to understand this literary technique, as it can really add depth to the story — so long as it is not being used in a hackneyed or incorrect way. It is also important for readers as they can understand truly meaning of the book. Moreover, it is vital to define irony in the ordinary life as it helps to communicate with people effective and correct. There is a necessity for people to use different figures of speech or poetic figures in real everyday life and in literature in order to express special emotions or attitude, to make the speech more interesting, significant and expressive. Irony is one of the many figures of speech that help to diversify language. This trope is well-known and widespread all over the world and for all ages. Irony is considered to be an object for many scientific researches in all countries and still is interesting for people in their ordinary speech. Thus the topic of this research paper is relevant.

. The subject of the paper is Irony. The object is the definition, essential features, types and common examples of irony. The aim of the paper is to research the Irony as a trope. Standing on such ground, there are several tasks pointed out:  to study the definition of Irony as a literary device;  to research the types and vital features of Irony;  to compare Irony with other tropes, that are similar in meaning and use;  to examine some common examples of Irony in real life and literature. Structurally the paper consists of introduction, three paragraphs, conclusion and a list of selеcted bibliography.

As it can be concluded frоm the human’s experience, all literary devices are essential and useful for everyday life and literature masterpieces that makes our cultural heritage. This fact proves that all figures of speech should be studied as they help us to communicate effectively, write fascinating books and shoot intriguing films, read literature and laugh, all it is possible owing to different types of poetic figures. Irony is one of the interesting and useful tropes, it is used quite often. Irony is a literary device in which contradictory statements or situations reveal a reality that is different frоm what appears to be true. There are many forms of irony featured in literature. The effectiveness of irony as a literary device depends on the reader’s expectations and understanding of the disparity between what «should» happen and what «actually» happens in a literary work. This can be in the form of an unforeseen outcome of an event, a character’s unanticipated behavior, or something incongruous that is said. There are also many examples of using irony in our everyday life in ordinary situations. In the general sense, there are sustained and verbal irony. Verbal irony is sometimes considered to be more complicated than a standard one as it not always based on the direct inner contradiction, when the reader feels an undercurrent with the opposite meaning behind an ironical word. The essential point is that scientists strictly separate irony and humor, as the latter always lead to laugh while the former rather lead to a sense of irritation, displeasure, pity or even regret. The great variety of examples of using irony in literature and our speech speaks for itself. Irony is common in our lives and all people should learn it for use it correctly and understand the world in a write way.
